Legal requirements
What you need to do...
1. Find someone you love...and who loves you back.
2. When you're sure they really are the one then move onto number three.
3. Find a venue, set a date and find your celebrant...I just happen to know one.
4. Make sure you are over 18 or have consent, this may need to be from the law courts.
5. Ensure you are not too closely related! For more information see the Attorney Generals website.
6. Complete your Notice of Intent to Marry Form (NIM). When you choose your date consider that the NIM must be lodged with your chosen celebrant at least a calendar month and a day before that date. The form is valid for 18 months and is transferable should you change your mind about the celebrant or you change dates...
You will most likely need your birth certificates or extracts to complete the NIM. Your divorce certificates if you have been previously married or death certificate if widowed.
7. With the help of your celebrant start creating that ceremony!!! Find your witnesses, you'll need two. You will probably need to see your celebrant a few times, to complete paperwork, plan the day and run through the ceremony to ensure all is perfect.
8. Meet your celebrant a few days before the day to sign the Statutory declarations on the official marriage certificate.
9. Ensure that on the day, your celebrant says the Monitum, you say the legally required minimum of vows and that the paperwork is all signed correctly.
10. Relax, pour a glass of champers and celebrate with your friends.
